<SYNOPSIS> Dreams
The original story of this movie is a tale by the name of “Cho-Shin’s dreams” in a history book about three Korean ancient countries written 1,000 years ago. In the golden age of the unified Shilla dynasty era. Cho-Shin is a Buddhist monk practicing asceticism for 10 years at a temple. He is good and gentle by nature. However, once he sees the beauty of Dal-Yeh, the daughter of the governor of a town, he cannot restrain his sexual desires. One night Cho-Shin breaks into her house and rapes her while she is bathing. She is already engaged to Mo-Ryeh, a Hwa-Rang ( a select young man in Shilla dynasty who excelled in beauty, bravery and military arts). So Cho-Shin has to escape with Dal-Yeh. Cho-Shin and Dal-Yeh live with their two children in a town. Dal-Yeh does not love Cho-Shin, though. On the contrary she expresses her hatred to him by making love with other man. Some day, Mo-Ryeh appears in this town in pursuit of the couple. They have to escape again. They cannot settle in anywhere. So they live a brand-tiller life. Their son dies. Dal-Yeh becomes a prostitute and Cho-Shin gets an opium addict. One day Dal-Yeh leaves Cho-Shin as she knows she is leprous. Long time has passed. Cho-Shin, now a beggar, shed tears of remorse when he hears Dal-Yeh died and his daughter became a nun. Mo-Ryeh, old white-haired, shows up to Cho-Shin who is doing penance for his sin as engraving Dal-Yeh’s wooden statue. Cho-Shin asks Mo-Ryeh to kill him, but Mo-Ryeh does not do because he himself realizes that he has been in pursuit of Cho-Shin on account of the desires which Cho-Shin had. Cho-Shin goes back to the temple where he is thinking of his life as just dreams. |
